more on St. Bernard's School

Thought some of you might be interested to see these pictures from St. B's when it was a vibrant, happenen' place!

Two are from Halloween. Yes! our Principal, Janet Cantwell, allowed the kids to dress...it was great fun for all of us and boosted morale no end. Notice one of our girls videotaping. - we had just finished and cleaned up from our Poetry Coffee House to celebrate the culmination of a lesson: we looked at contemporary song lyrics as poetry and they choose a current song (group), played the music and then interviewed each other on the meaning behind the lyrics and how the music affected this. It was a blast!

This is a photo of the quilt our students made in the Book & Garden Club that the Library started. We actually dug up, pulled out all the old plants, planted flowers in the front of the school in Fall and Spring; in winter, we made this quilt. Students did it all themselves by using fabric crayons, and then piecing together the quilt and sewing with a machine. I schlepped in an ironing board, iron and, of course, a sewing machine...Yes! we had boys in the club....it was so much fun. I still have the quilt and I hope someday I will be in a Library where I can hang it up as a wonderful reminder of those few, great years.

St. Bernard's Library Lives on in other Catholic Schools

As many of you already know, St. Bernard's in Riverdale, Maryland has closed. The library was an exceptional one due to the wonderful work of Tina Hudak during her years there. I had the privilege of being librarian there for two and one half years.
I am happy to report that the books and other resources have been given to other area Catholic Schools -- my school, St. Francis de Sales, St. Anthony's, St. Gabriel's, St. Ambrose, and St. Mathias. Tina, the awesome collection you put together will continue to be enjoyed by children for years to come!
